Shares of PSU Punjab National Bank rallied sharply on Monday, October 19, climbing more than 7% on the BSE to touch ₹125.10, even as the wider market stayed under pressure. The surge came after the public sector lender reported a solid set of numbers for the July-September quarter of the current financial year, giving investors a fresh reason to take a closer look at the stock.

Net Profit Climbs 13% to ₹5,532 Crore

The bank posted a net profit of ₹5,532 crore for the September 2026 quarter, compared with ₹4,904 crore in the same period last year, which works out to year-on-year growth of about 13%. For one of the country’s biggest state-run lenders, a double-digit rise in earnings suggests that the business is moving in the right direction. Investors, who tend to reward banks that show steady profit growth, responded with heavy buying through the session.

Income and Operating Performance

Total income rose to ₹38,185 crore from ₹36,214 crore a year earlier, an increase of roughly 5.4%. Interest income, which is the money a bank earns from loans and investments and forms the backbone of its revenue, stood at ₹34,585 crore during the quarter.

Operating profit, which shows how much the bank earns from its core activities before setting aside money for bad loans, increased to ₹7,532 crore from ₹7,227 crore, a gain of about 4%. Net profit growing faster than operating profit is a detail worth noting, as it shows the bottom line improved by more than the day-to-day business did on its own.

Brokerages Split on the PSU Bank Stock

Global brokerage CLSA has taken a positive view and rates the stock “outperform” with a target price of ₹140. Compared with the previous closing level, that target implies a potential upside of around 20%, though from Monday’s higher price the remaining room is closer to 12%.

Citi, on the other hand, remains cautious and has kept a “sell” rating on the shares. The brokerage did raise its target price from ₹103 to ₹110, which is a small upgrade in its outlook, but the new figure still sits about 12% below where the stock traded on Monday.

What the Wider Analyst Community Says

The disagreement between these two brokerages is not unusual, and the broader numbers show that the sentiment leans positive overall. Of the 23 analysts who track Punjab National Bank, 14 recommend buying the stock, three suggest holding on to it, and six advise selling. That means roughly 61% of analysts remain bullish, while a sizeable minority still believes the recent rise has already priced in much of the good news.

A Strong Run Over the Last Four Years

Monday’s jump is only the latest chapter in a long recovery for the stock. On October 21, 2022, the shares were trading at ₹40.75, and at ₹125.10 they have now gained more than 200% in four years. Over the past three years alone, the stock has risen by more than 70%, which shows that a large part of the rally has come in recent times rather than far in the past.

The 52-week range gives further context on where the stock stands today. Its high over the past year is ₹135.15, while the low is ₹98.50, which means the shares are currently trading about 7% below their peak and roughly 27% above their lowest point of the year.

Whether the stock can move back toward its yearly high will depend largely on how the bank keeps up its earnings momentum in the coming quarters and whether more brokerages begin to side with CLSA’s optimistic outlook.
